The Vineyard Song

Work To Be Done on the Vines

When you grow a vineyard there's loads of work to be done throughout the year. Every job has its season... pruning, shoot thinning, irrigating, tie the vines, spray for weeds, and pick the grapes when they are perfectly ready. It's not rocket science but it does take a little tenacity to make sure each job gets done at the correct time. I enjoy the process. I don't mind walking through my vines every morning, when things are blooming, so I can keep an eye out as to where the growing season is going.

In early March, I always get busy pruning back last year's growth to prepare the vines for their growth spurt every Spring. Fortunately, I run a small boutique vineyard so I can handle most all the work myself. I need some help when we Harvest but otherwise, I run a simple operation. It's all about timing. I have some great friends who mentor and guide me along the way which is a huge help... I've learned so much about grape vines over the years I've been here in Paso Robles. It's a great balance to working at my music. Doing any one thing all the time gets to be too much. I always look forward to getting back to my music after I've had a morning in the vineyard.

The Vineyard Song

Waking up before the sun
Stumblin’ out of bed
Pulling on my hat and boots
Moonlight on my head
Mockingbird up in that Oak tree
Mocks me with his dance
He knows my job is never ending
Ooops, forgot my pants

You gotta prune a little, tie a little
Thin and tuck and wine a little
Grab a cup of joe
There's work to be done on the vines
You gotta spray a little, pick a little
Poison those damn squirrels a little
Grab a cup of joe
There's work to be done on the vines

Rev that tractor down the rows
Pull those nets in place
The morning sun comes up and melts
The smile right off your face
Wet bandana round my neck
Canteen on the pole
What's this underneath my boot?
Another gopher hole

You gotta prune a little, tie a little
Thin and tuck and wine a little
Grab a cup of joe
There's work to be done on the vines
You gotta spray a little, pick a little
Poison those damn squirrels a little
Grab a cup of joe
There's work to be done on the vines

Time to party, check the brix
Harvest day is here
Dump those grapes into their bins
Celebrate another year!
Separate those stems and seeds
Blend a fruity crush
Then do it all again next year
Tell me, what’s the rush?

You gotta prune a little, tie a little
Thin and tuck and wine a little
Grab a cup of joe
There's work to be done on the vines…………………

Behind the Music

This is a fun, light song about all the jobs you have to do on a vineyard. You get up early and get your work done before that hot sun gets too high. If you don't, you'll pay for it in sweat equity. It's always a challenge staying ahead of the varmints who want to eat your grapes. They work full time against you.0
