As Long as it Takes

This song is about staying power, or should I say the power of staying. Commitment is a wonderful thing... to stick around through it all and be there for each other, no matter what. "Sometimes we hurt, sometimes we laugh in pleasure"... isn't that the cycle of life. There's a beautiful balance to life and love if you let it flow and you stay in the game.

The question is: "How deep, how high, how long...?" The answer is: "As Long as it Takes"...

As Long as it Takes

Two became one
Started our life together, so much unknown
With this simple ring, I pledged my love forever
Taking you home

Sometimes we hurt, sometimes we laugh in pleasure
The story of love, pages of time we treasure
Hold me so tight, the rest of my life
If we could just forgive mistakes
How deep, how high, how long
As long as it takes
As long as it takes

Over the years, we’ve been through so much together
We always stood strong
As we grow older, we’ll brave the stormy weather
Love can never be wrong

Sometimes we hurt
Sometimes we laugh in pleasure
The story of love, pages of time we treasure
Hold me so tight, the rest of my life
If we could just forgive mistakes
How deep, how high, how long
As long as it takes
As long as it takes

Behind the Music

This was a fun song to record. I remember Cusick and I came out into the studio while Huff was laying down his electric guitar leads. He's a stickler about the feel and texture of his tracks which I always appreciate. He rarely plays the same thing twice in a row so I have to record EVERYTHING he does and then decide later which are the gems. Sometimes it's hard to decide... he'll play a track and we'll say, "Fantastic" and he'll say, "No" let's do another Take. OK, let's roll it again. It was a real treat for me to just lay on the studio rug and listen to him play those beautiful leads that answer my vocal lines. The song just fell together. I only had the title at first and I knew I liked that, so Cusick and I worked on the lyric while Huff worked on the guitar parts. I layed down the piano track to a click until it felt just right to me. We recorded it at 3 different tempos. A faster tempo made more sense for time and radio play, etc., but something kept calling me back to the slowest version. I kept saying "this doesn't need to be on radio", let's just milk the emotion that is there and let it run as long as it needs (I know... as LONG as it takes, right?). So we did...
