The Price of Passion

Relationships and love are wonderful, but they sometimes can be quite painful... seems whenever we put our heart out on the line, it is vulnerable to many forces in its path. Temporary bliss often leads to it’s own results, given a little time. Attraction is an incredible and explosive thing... it's fast, volatile and sparks passion before our brain can even catch up with this fiery emotion. When it comes to lust and love, there are consequences to every action; whether that be pleasure or pain, its intensity is often determined by how deep you are risking. When we jump all the way in, we risk all the repercussions that come with that... and it's even more difficult when you don't know how committed the other half of the relationship is. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…

Now, add in that unpredictable factor of "time" to add a little more confusion to your situation. Those early emotions come easily but as they simmer, the cerebral cortex and insecurities often become involved in the equation. Once we jump past that initial physical stage, understanding becomes more complex, by the day. That's when things get real interesting... When the physical side leads the relationship, then thoughts and reason follow too far behind, often leaving havoc and hurt in their wake.

However deep we dive for pleasure, there is always an equal price to pay, as we come up for air. Sometimes it feels good; sometimes it hurts. If we could just learn to take it a bit slower and let wisdom and rationality catch up with our attractions, love would have a little more time to simmer, and might even lead to richer relationships. But then, what fun would that be, right?...

The Price of Passion

You gave him all your heart, you really took the fall
He left you in the dark, that night he took it all
So what’re you gonna do now
Gonna wear it like the blues
When it’s a fact of love babe
Sometime you win, sometimes you lose
But pay your dues, cause that’s…

The price of passion, everybody’s gotta pay
The price of passion, somewhere along the way

So here we are together, learning from mistakes
Still trying to lick the wounds of love, in a world of give and take
The wrongs we must forgive them
They don’t know what they’ve lost
Let Heaven help you find your way
No matter what the cost
Pick up your cross and pay

The price of passion, everybody’s gotta pay
The price of passion, somewhere along the way

How can something that feels so good
Suddenly turn so bad
If you believe in the search for love
And the truth is all you have, then just be glad, that’s…

The price of passion, everybody’s gotta pay
The price of passion, somewhere along the way
The price of passion, everybody’s gotta pay
The price of passion, somewhere along the way

words and music by Richard Klender & Jeff Silbar

Behind the Music

Back when I was a Nashville staffwriter, I remember getting together with Jeff Silbar to write something for my late great publisher, Buddy Killen. Jeff has written a number of hit tunes like "Through the Years" and others, so it was great to get to work together. He came up with the synth pad sound that was the basis for us to write the melody. I had the title of "Price of Passion", in my notebook, and we worked in Jeff's L.A. project studio until we had a good contemporary "germ" going. Then later I finished up the rest of the song before recording it in Nashville and L.A.

Behind the Video

This was Bob Cusick's baby... he had been working on the concept for over six months and then once he had the beginning and end, he knocked it out. I've always enjoyed watching his visuals evolve. We had filmed a few ideas years ago, for this song (never really released), so he was able to tie in some of that footage which makes it truly special to me. It's like a time-capsule inside a time-capsule. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Special thanks to our original cast: Mimi Monaco, Shauna & RK for their "once upon a time" cameos.
