At 22

We're all getting a bit older each day. Sometimes I wish I could do everything I could do when I was much younger, but actually maybe some of those things; Not... As we get older we start to recognize priorities and the finer things in life; like love and commitment and as we learn, we are not as distracted by all the fast-moving eye-candy of our youth.

We also came up with some creative lines for “At 42" and "At 52" but decided we better quit while we're ahead... so that younger listeners in their 30s and 40s could better appreciate this song. This way, there is much more potential for younger artists to "cover" our song, as well. We can always save the older verses for live performance, when I embark on that Senior Home Tour. OMG... save me...

At 22

I can’t do what I used to do, at 22,
There’s nothing I wouldn’t do, at 22
Oooh at 22, I’d drink whiskey with the boyz,
At 22, I had all the big-boy toys,
At 22, That’s when I crashed into you
At 22, love isn’t what you say, it’s what you do

Chorus
I still fall in love with you everyday
I’m here 24/7 to kiss each tear away
We have as far to go
As we’ve already been
But everyday I fall in love again

I can’t do what I used to do, at 32
I dumped the toys to raise the boys, at 32
Oooh at 32, worked two jobs to get us through,
At 32, drove all night to be with you,
At 32, I’m still I crashing into you
At 32, love isn’t what you say, it’s what you do

I still fall in love with you everyday
I’m here 24/7 to kiss each tear away
We have as far to go
As we’ve already been
But everyday I fall in love again

Behind the Music

I work with some outstanding collaborators... we get together at least once a year for what we call "Writer's Camp" - a week or 10 day get-together where we barbecue, drink, laugh and just try to write great songs. It's kind of like a songwriter's "hunting trip". Great bonding! We got talking about age and Ted Winchester. had a line "I can't do what I used to do, when I was 22". That got the ball rolling. Ted and I used to write/work together many years ago as a duo - he's very melodic and also comes up with some great titles and lyric lines from time to time. As we started working on this lyric, Bob & Ron got busy putting their heads together musically to create some memorable rhythmic instrumental hooks. Before we knew it, we were all working on the idea in some fashion. Cusick came up with the line "That's when I crashed into you" which I love. I sang a couple melody lines and so did Ted and the song started coming together over a few hours. We were concentrating on writing in a modern country genre which has a nice touch of edge to it. Personally, I really like the driving "stops" that Bob and Ron orchestrated, which makes it more musically interesting! In the end, we ended up with a double-hook; one in the verses and another in the chorus. Fun when it comes together that way.

Behind the Video

This video shoot was a hoot! Cusick & I got together in the early morning fog and shot through the backroads near my vineyard property in Paso Robles, and kept driving within 12 miles of where I live for more pickup shots. There is a lot of beautiful scenery here with vineyards and orchards of olive trees, etc. I love to take drives here in wine country and so I knew exactly where we could go. Cusick was filming in 4K UltraHD so we could get some beautiful quality in the beautiful morning light. This was a total "guerrilla-shoot". Cusick was filming and I was singing. For most shots we didn't have a playback system, so I had to wear an iPhone in my chest pocket and listen to the song from that. That made it tough to keep up with the song when you're listening back thru a ½" speaker. Funny... oh well, with more tenacity, than brains, we somehow made it work. I remember when I was singing my parts along the double-yellow line in the road, that we had to keep hollering "car!" because work traffic started kicking up around 8:30am so that was a memorable challenge. Every time I got into a lyric line or two, someone would yell "car" and we had to quickly run the equipment to the shoulder of the road. Onlookers had no idea what these idiot guys were doing in the middle of their road during morning drive time. One of the most fun parts was when we headed to downtown Paso near the train station. Normally, it's very empty and vacant down there but that morning there were a bunch of box cars with grafitti painted all over them. Cusick said, "Perfect, light, let's shoot here!" so that was a blast. We just winged it and kept going until we got tired. Then we came back to my barn, transferred all the video and got busy editing. It was a memorable and fun shoot. Hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed making it...
